About our rating system

The great route most recent update together with all the Bikepackers Supporters spots from our directory ( green bike sign ) and alternative sections ( orange lines ).

( Please remember that rain can completely change the conditions of roads. We try to give the most updated versions of the routes by staying in contact with locals ranchers who report us constantly the latest conditions but many times it is hard even for us to find out quick if things have changed in very remote areas. So please make sure you always ask informations to the ranchers along the way about how the following sections of a route are especially if there have been serious precipitations in the past summer. The Mexican Government takes care of remote communities and always sends a military team out with a bulldozer to fix the ranch roads after a heavy rain season but unfortunately the road fixing teams are normally only one or two in a very big area, sometimes in all Baja, and can take long time to plow every main way across the Sierra and each individual ranch access. It is very important that you are in a good physical trained condition anytime you venture with your bike in Baja because roads can be much harder than what other cyclists have reported. Do not make it a matter of proud, if you feel that heading back or hitching a ride on a pick-up is better, that means it is probably a smart lifesaver decision. Always check and ask for updates on routes AFTER a rain.)

Please read this important article that Mattia Dalvit ( @busyerode ) wrote about the Divide to have a realistic opinion about this famous route and its Pros and Cons:

About the boat crossing in Mulegè: go with “Buko”!

We already talked about this topic in our article about the Baja Divide alternative route from La Ballena to Mulegè but we thought that a separate dedicated post on this subject was due and probably easier to find when researching. First important thing to say is: check the wind forecast for the Sea of Cortes…

The new RATING system for routes: differentiated and safer

We believe that the current method of assessing the difficulty of bikepacking routes is inappropriate and can put many people at risk. Like many other outdoor activities (surfing, climbing, etc.), bikepacking has seen an exponential rise in popularity since the pandemic, creating a vast audience for all related content. This means that anyone producing such…

From sandy hills to rocky climbs, stunning vistas to wide, loose…

I now live in Lake Tahoe, California, with my second husband Jim, our four children, three grandchildren, and our Golden Retriever,…

Alternative Baja Divide section to Mulegé from the Pacific

Recently Mattia Dalvit (@busyerode), his cycling partner Kevin and friend Indiana Schulz (@cycling_kindness), explored a new incredibly beautiful way, with many very furnished resupply spots, iconic little villages, cave paintings and oasis to reach Mulegé coming from the Pacific Ocean that includes some serious climbing, an unmatchable high pass view, a radical 1.5h hike-a-bike and…

📌 BAJA DIVIDE…is not easy!

You can read everywhere things like: “99% rideable,” “Climbing difficulty: 4 – Easy,” “Technical difficulty: 6 – Moderate.” I believe it’s urgent to provide more truthful information about this famous route… otherwise, someone might get hurt! After sweating my way through the Divide myself, I’ve spent the last few years hosting travelers at my home…
